Before competing at ONE: CALL TO GREATNESS on Friday, 22 February, ONE Championship’s Cambodian Stars Kong Sambo and Khon Sichan got invited to the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Singapore.
Ambassador Extraordinary Ngoun Sokveng greeted the competitors with open arms and praised mixed martial artist Sichan and ONE Super Series debutant Sambo for spreading the word of Kun Khmer to the world.
“Hard work will be paid off,” Ambassador Sokveng stated.
“Sending Cambodian fighters to one country or another is the way that we show the world [our] great legacy and the strength of Cambodians through Kun Khmer and Bokator.”
Representants from Khmer media was present, as well as the trainers of Sambo and Sichan: Kingdom Fight Gym co-founder Kwok Leung Tsang and Phnom Penh MMA leader Alan Mccune.
Ambassador Sokveng promised to be present at the event that later took place in front of a sold-out Singapore Indoor Stadium.
“I, on behalf of the Embassy of Cambodia, wish Sichan and Sambo the best.”
“We are also thankful for the coaches, Alan and [Rith Chea], for their amazing job.”
Unfortunately, Khon Sichan and Kong Sambo did not manage to bring home victory to Cambodia despite meticulous preparation.
In the evening’s opening bout, Sichan was defeated via submission against Indonesian Rudy “The Golden Boy” Agustian while Sambo went three rounds against China’s Zhang Chenlong and lost via split decision.
Despite the setbacks, the team has held a positive mindset that echoed the words of Ambassador Sokveng before ONE: CALL TO GREATNESS.
“It’s the true blood of Cambodians. We are real fighters,” The Cambodian Ambassador stated.
