This Saturday, 19 January, ONE Championship will kick off the new year with ONE: ETERNAL GLORY at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Featuring some of the world’s best martial artists, the promotion’s long-awaited return will see ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua Pacio make his first title defense against Japanese contender Yosuke Saruta.
The 12-bout card was supposed to feature the return of Cambodian Top Team’s (CTT) Thai Rithy, but he suffered an injury and was forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout with Dutch-Indonesian breakout star Anthony “The Archangel” Engelen.
Despite that, ONE: ETERNAL GLORY is still brimming with must-see action. Here are two major reasons why Cambodia should tune in to the show on Saturday.
#1 Future Opponents For Cambodia
The aforementioned Engelen will still compete in front of his home crowd in Jakarta, and he is looking to make up for lost time in a spectacular way.
The 33-year-old had not competed in The Home Of Martial Arts since early January 2017 when he took on CTT product Meas Meul at ONE: HEART OF THE LION in Singapore last November. That bout ended with a devastating head kick loss for the Cambodian after a mere 39 seconds.
To everyone’s surprise, “The Archangel” returned to competition only eight days later to take home yet another first-round victory — this time over Jimmy Yabo via submission.
Engelen may not be facing Rithy this weekend; however, he is open to the idea of rebooking the featherweight contest.
“If his injury happened during training, that sucks. If it happened during a fight, not smart to have a fight [one] month before,” the Dutch-Indonesian said.
“Anyway, get well soon, and you know where to find me.”
The event will feature four bouts in the featherweight division — the same division CTT stars like Meul, Rithy, and Rin Saroth are trying to conquer.
Kun Khmer specialist Sok Thy should also keep a close eye on ONE: ETERNAL GLORY as two main card bouts will feature ONE Super Series Muay Thai contests in the flyweight division.
#2 The Return Of The Lee Clan
ONE: ETERNAL GLORY will also star two of Evolve MMA’s most prominent athletes as Christian “The Warrior” Lee, and Bruno Pucci are both scheduled for crucial main card bouts.
Being the younger brother of ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion “Unstoppable” Angela Lee could be a tough task to handle, but Christian has had no problems building a stellar career well distinguished from his superstar sister.
He now returns to action as he rematches Team Lakay’s Edward “The Ferocious” Kelly to settle the score after a disqualification loss following an illegal suplex at ONE: BEYOND THE HORIZON in early September.
Ahead of his rematch, Lee has been training vigorously with his sister’s spouse, two-time BJJ No-Gi World Champion Bruno Pucci.
The 28-year-old “Puccibull” is fresh off a 56-second submission victory in November. Now, he looks to keep the momentum going by taking on former ONE Lightweight World Champion Kotetsu “No Face” Boku in an exciting featherweight clash.
“I am very honored to share the cage with him. He is a veteran of the sport, a former champion, and a real tough guy,” said Pucci.
With the ONE Strawweight World Title on the line and a plethora of emerging future top contenders, ONE: ETERNAL GLORY is unquestionably an event that Cambodia cannot miss!
